Dalí Museum, St Petersburg Florida

reproach..."
- Albert Field, Founder of The Salvador Dalí Archives

Department
Mr.
Joseph Nuzzolo has over twenty years experience in the Dalí market.
He has sold nearly 10,000 authentic Dalí works, including oil
paintings, watercolors, drawings, limited edition graphics and sculptures.
He is solely responsible for building the largest known private collection
of Dalí in the world. A collection numbering over 1100 works
that includes, paintings, drawings, sculptures and graphics.
The bond that Mr. Nuzzolo shares with his clients comes from his
willingness to expend endless amounts of time and energy to secure
for them a valued collection. His clients have access to the latest
information regarding developments in the Dalí market. He
provides an environment for collectors to purchase works without
competing with other buyers, as in an auction, or paying Gallery
retail prices. It is because of this, that Mr. Nuzzolo has so many
long standing repeat clients.
Among his friends he counts Museum Directors, Dalí scholars
and fellow experts placing him in the elite inner circle of Dalí experts. Mr
Nuzzolo began working with Albert Field founder of The Salvador Dalí Archives
in the early 1990's.
Mr. Field and Mr. Nuzzolo shared a common passion
for the works of Salvador Dalí and spent many hours discussing
his works. Mr. Field held Mr. Nuzzolo in high regard. Over the years
Mr. Field developed a friendship not just with Mr. Nuzzolo, but with
members of Mr. Nuzzolo's family. In 2001 Mr. Field wrote, “Mr.
Nuzzolo takes great care to be absolutely certain that all Dalí works
he sells are from legitimate editions and, over the many years, I
have authenticated thousands of Dalí graphic works for him....(Joseph
Nuzzolo) is one of the few reputable Dali dealers in America."
Another of Mr. Nuzzolo's colleagues is Mr. Marshall Rousseau Director
Emeritus of the Salvador Dalí Museum in Saint Petersburg,
Florida, who said of Mr. Nuzzolo, “Since
my retirement as Executive Director of the Salvador Dalí Museum
in St. Petersburg, Florida I have worked with him on a number of
projects and have been impressed with his knowledge of the market
for Dalí prints and originals. More importantly, I
appreciate his honest and straight-forward approach to collecting
the works of Dalí. I find his work methods refreshing.”
Today Mr. Nuzzolo counts Frank Hunter, a highly respected Dali expert
and the current Director of the Salvador Dalí Archives as
a close confidant.
Mr. Hunter recently wrote of Mr. Nuzzolo, "With
a combination of knowledge, understanding and enthusiasm, Mr. Nuzzolo
sweeps his competitors by the wayside. He understands the importance
of authenticity and all Dali works handled by his Society come with
the highly respected assurances from the Archives."

The Collector’s Advocate
“Now it’s my problem” This
is usually what a client hears when they come to Joseph
Nuzzolo after they have been sold a Dalí work
of questionable authenticity.
Mr. Nuzzolo’s expertise in Salvador Dalí has
been of great aide to those that have encountered fraudulent works
of art. He has consulted with both local and federal law enforcement
authorities and has even assisted the U.S. Attorney's office with
the sentencing of a known criminal. A Dalí collectors advocate,
Mr. Nuzzolo has worked tirelessly to procure restitution for those
who have purchased Dalí works that are not authentic. Some
of victims he has helped have described him as "pit bull" when
it comes to getting their money back. He has interacted with credit
card companies and when necessary, has involved law enforcement authorities
to make his clients whole. All of this work is done free of charge
to help victims in need and maintain the integrity of the Dalí market.
When a victim contacts a law enforcement authority,
they will often refer Mr. Nuzzolo to help them with their cause.
A collector in Connecticut wrote, "Upon contacting Federal
Law Enforcement Authorities, I was referred to Joseph Nuzzolo of
the Salvador Dalí Society. I was told that Mr. Nuzzolo would
provide authentication reports for my works of art so that I may
receive restitution if they were deemed incorrect."
Over the years there have been many clients for whom
he have secured refunds due to the efforts of Mr. Nuzzolo. Here
are a few recent cases:
When a contractor in Ohio purchased what he thought was a work by
Salvador Dalí from a television shopping channel, he felt
it was a bargain. After showing it to Mr. Nuzzolo he was informed
that it was a fake. Instead of leaving the client to navigate his
way around the representations made by the seller, Mr. Nuzzolo
took it upon himself to get the client all of his money back. He
tracked down the original source of the work and provided the information
to the Federal Authorities, in attempt to stop others from being
ripped off. Even though the process took months the client received
a full refund. When it was over the client wrote, “It
was a struggle to get our money back, but with the help of Joe,
we finally got everything resolved.”
Another case involved a very busy physician who placed a $20,000
deposit on a Dalí painting in a retail Gallery. After viewing
a photograph of the painting, Mr. Nuzzolo gave his opinion that it
was not by the hand of Dalí. The Gallery, however still refused
to give a refund, stating the certificate provided by the seller
was sufficient proof of authenticity. (The Salvador Dalí Society's "Bulletproof
Authentication" was established to put a stop to the dubious
practice of "in house" authentications.) Mr Nuzzolo, at
his own expense, obtained detailed reports from four leading Dalí experts.
These were presented to the Gallery who still refused to issue a
refund. Several months had already past. It was then that Mr.
Nuzzolo took the matter to the state’s Attorney General’s
Office. A few days later the deposit was returned in full. Of
his experience the Doctor wrote, “However after pressure
from Joe, the gallery returned my deposit, I must say that Joe did
not ask to be paid for his efforts. He did this to maintain
the integrity of the Dalí art market and to protect me because
I was one of his clients.”
A client in Florida who has worked with Mr. Nuzzolo
since 1993 had purchase a work represented as a Dalí for $17,200.
Mr. Nuzzolo determined that the work was fake. The sellers however
were adamant about keeping the clients money. When all other efforts
failed, Mr. Nuzzolo engaged the Los Angeles Police Departments Art
Fraud Division to help in the case. He even interacted with the credit
card companies. Although it took months, the client was refunded
the entire amount. The collector wrote, "Joe arranged
a 3 way call between him, me and the Los Angeles Police Departments
Art Fraud Division.....I was refunded the entire $17,200...Joe never
once asked to paid for the help he gave me in securing a refund of
my money"
As Mr. Nuzzolo explains, "These battles are
intense and time consuming, the often take months to resolve and
sometimes they cannot be resolved. They cause unnecessary stress
for the collector, who entered the market with good intentions. That
is what bothers me the most. A person works very hard to be in a
position to collect art. Many of my clients have told me that they
thought about collecting Dalí works for years before they
were finally in the right position to make an acquisition. To have
their dream shattered by an unscrupulous dealer is something I cannot
tolerate. That is what motivates me to take on these cases. But all
of this can be avoided if they simply took the time to give me a
call or send me an e-mail before making a Dalí purchase, I
could save them a lot of heartache."
An Eye for investment caliber art.
On February 6th 2007 two Dalí paintings sold at Sothebys in London.
One was Kabuki dancer which sold for $189,000. Two years prior, Mr. Nuzzolo has sold the painting to his client for only $100,000.
At the same auction a painting of Alice in Wonderland sold for $259,000. It was only fifteen months before, that Mr. Nuzzolo had sold that painting to his client for $82,500.
Joseph Nuzzolo is known in the marketplace for finding and securing exceptional values on paintings, drawings and graphic works of Salvador Dalí. The Mintz collection, the largest private collection in the United States is currently valued at over $9,000,000. Mr. Nuzzolo secured the collection for his clients for under $4,000,000.
He has and continues to build collections for his clients that not only retain their value but are beneficial investments for them as well.
